37 inch tire, 4.56 gear or 4.88?

Postby Warmachine » Sat Dec 17, 2016 2:09 pm

Hey Guys,

So It looks like I've decided I'm going to go with 37 inch tires. Upgrade should be getting done hopefully before Cleghorn. The issue I'm having now is deciding on gears. 4.56 or 4.88. Keep in mind I'm in a 2017 JK.. I've heard from guys that run 4.56 gears on 37's and are very happy with it. Saves on gas for highway use and still plenty of power off road. Has anyone here ran 4.56 gears on any of the newer JK's with 37 inch tires? I read a chart that shows 4.56 gears would be the perfect medium between daily driving and offroad... 4.88 would be slightly on the higher end of RPM's. How much of a difference this actually makes in terms of miles per gallon I'm not really sure.... Also the 4.56 gear would be stronger due to the size.

What are your thoughts?

I've attached the chart.

I have 5.13 gears and 35" tire on my 2016 JK and I love it. Its very good in moderate rocky area' s and excellent on the freeway. A little hit to MPG.

You should compare your current (stock?) tire/gears to your new selection. If you want the same performance as stock stay at the same RPM or better than your stock setup.

For example if your stock setup is 31' tires and 3.73 gears to match your current performance you should go with 37" tires is 4.56 gears.

I'm currently running 3.21 gears with 33s. Based on this chart 4.56 with 37s would be a huge improvement in performance. But from what I've gathered, 4.56 gears is not the norm for 37s.

You are correct for 35/37's on a JK its 5.13 or 5.37 gears.

If you go 4.56 or higher you will see an improvement in performance from you current tires/gears.
